Pastor GaryWarm greetings to you in the wonderful name of our Lord Jesus Christ! My name is Gary Hindman and I have been the pastor of First Presbyterian since 1989!
I was born and raised in Bellevue, a suburb of Omaha, Nebraska. At age 16 I gave my life to Christ and heard the call to Gospel ministry. After high school I attended Hastings College (central Nebraska) and then the University of Nebraska where I graduated from the College of Arts and Science. From there I attended seminary graduating with a Master of Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary. In 1969 Barbara and I were married and went to Germany where I attended two semesters at the University of Marburg and Barbara worked as a school nurse.
When we returned to the United States I became ordained and have had churches in central Nebraska (Axtell\Kearney), Phoenix, AZ and Fort Dodge, Iowa before coming to Upland. While in Phoenix we adopted our two daughters and helped establish the Presbyterian expression of Marriage Encounter. While there I completed a doctoral degree from the School of Theology, Claremont, California.
Our daughters are now grown. Our older daughter lives in Virginia where her husband serves in the U. S. Navy. We are proud grandparents of their beautiful daughter and son. Our younger daughter recently graduated from the university and is working on a credential to become an elementary teacher. Barbara teaches nursing at near-by Chaffey college.
My vision for our church includes growth in faith and numbers, quality worship services, team ministry of both clergy and laity, and people enjoying spiritual enrichment by sharing faith, learning more about the Bible and being involved in personal prayer.
First Presbyterian Church is an exciting church with an excellent staff and leaders. One of the phrases often repeated here is "First Presbyterian, where Christ is the center."

Pastor DarelGreetings to you in Christ's name! My name is Darel Griffin. I serve as Minister of Visitation on a part-time basis. I enjoy visiting, praying and serving communion to members and friends of our congregation whether in the hospital or in their place of residence.
I was born in Los Angeles and raised in a loving Christian home. My grandfather was an ordained pastor and my father was active in lay ministry. One summer in a conference setting, I responded to God's call to become a Christian minister.
I graduated from U.S.C. where I attended on a track scholarship. The seminary of my choice was San Francisco Theological Seminary. After receiving my Master of Divinity, I continued to work on my doctoral degree while teaching New Testament Greek.
Following full-time pastorates in Laguna Beach and Coachella, I believed God was calling me into public education. I was a teacher and later a counselor in the Chaffey School District for twenty-one years. At the same time I worked as a "tent making" pastor by serving churches in Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga and Ontario. After being honorably retired from the Riverside Presbytery, I accepted the position of Minister of Visitation here at Upland.
In 1969 Joretta and I were married and blended our family of six children. Unfortunately, we have both lost our oldest sons by death. But God has blessed us with nine grandchildren through the happy marriages of our two daughters and two sons. Our daughter, Cindy, is married to Obed who is a Peruvian Pastor and Mission Director in Lima, Peru.
We have served as a clergy couple for Presbyterian Marriage Encounter for 24 years. This has been a very important ministry to us as we have helped to lead weekends throughout the U.S.A. as well as Kenya and Peru.
I love the Lord, I love people and I love my church!
